Author's Note

As a broadcast journalist with a master’s degree in mass communication, I’ve dedicated my career to telling stories and informing the public. However, my mom’s journey with vitiligo inspired me to share a deeply personal story—one that opened my eyes to the complexities of self-identity and the challenges of living with a visible difference.

As a little girl, I watched my mom navigate the emotional and physical distress that came with developing vitiligo later in life. I saw how these changes affected her sense of self and how society’s reactions made it even harder for her to find peace with her appearance. It was heartbreaking to witness her discomfort with her own skin, and it fueled my desire to raise awareness and foster understanding for those living with vitiligo.

Through my own experience, I realized that many people struggle in silence with their vitiligo journey. I wanted to amplify their stories, so in 2018, I started my social media blog Beautiful Skin, where I shared the journeys of others on their paths to self-acceptance. Through these stories, I hoped to show the world that vitiligo doesn’t define anyone—it’s simply one part of their unique beauty.

My mission grew stronger over time, and I knew I needed to start with youth. When children are taught compassion and empathy early on, they grow into more accepting and open-minded adults. If I can reach even one child and help them embrace the diversity in society, or help one person find the confidence to accept their skin, then I will have succeeded.

This book is a step forward in that journey—a way to bring more awareness to vitiligo and remind everyone that beauty is all-inclusive, and confidence comes from within.

I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to James Smith, Dorian Davis, Kennis Ashton Smith, and my dearest friends. Your unwavering support and encouragement have made this vision a reality, and I am forever thankful for your belief in me and this cause.

With all my love,
